THE NEW CENTRE IS LOCATED IN THE PREMISES OF INDIA YAMAHA MOTOR’S PLANT IN KANCHIPURAM DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU.
Taking another step towards its commitment to ‘Make in India’ by 2018, Yamaha has established a new R&D centre. Located in the premises of India Yamaha Motor’s plant in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, it is the second R&D centre of the company in the country. The company has made an investment of Rs 66 crore to set-up the centre, which is a part of the Rs 1,500 crore investment that was announced earlier. The new centre will ensure optimum utilisation of resources at both the locations and focus on the enhancement of the plant’s capability and capacity.
Commenting on the inauguration ceremony, Yasuo Ishihara, managing director, YMRI, said, “The objective of the new Centre is to develop models for India and eventually, the Global market. The Chennai Centre shall be the second main pillar for YMRI. By collaboration with the current development power in Surajpur centre, we aim to strengthen more of the cost reduction and attractive product development in the Chennai centre. The key role of this India Integrated Development Center is to develop optimised specifications for the Indian market.”
Yamaha Motor India has some long term plans to develop products which fit the Indian & global customer requirements. At the same time, the company wants to carry the brand DNA of performance, innovation, design, style and sportiness. Intended to increase Yamaha’s manufacturing competitiveness in the country, the new centre aims to develop not only higher specification but also low-cost products with good balance for the India market. For this purpose, it has state-of-the-art facilities including prototype testing & validation and a test track with simulations of Indian road conditions.
Since the starting of last fiscal, Yamaha launched some interesting products, including the Saluto 125, Saluto RX, YZF-R3, YZF-R15S and the Ray-ZR. With another R&D facility in the country, we can expect some more exciting scooters and motorcycles in the near future.
